Safe beliefs for propositional theories

چکیده
We propose an extension of answer sets, that we call safe beliefs, that can be used to study several properties and notions of answer sets and logic programming from a more general point of view. Our definition, based on intuitionistic logic and following ideas from D. Pearce [Stable inference as intuitionistic validity, Logic Programming 38 (1999) 79–91], also provides a general approach to define several semantics based on different logics or inference systems. We prove that, in particular, intuitionistic logic can be replaced with any other proper intermediate logic without modifying the resulting semantics. We also show that the answer set semantics satisfies an important property, the “extension by definition”, that can be used to construct program translations. As a result we are able to provide a polynomial translation from propositional theories into the class of disjunctive programs. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Computing Preferred Safe Beliefs
We recently proposed a definition of a language for nonmonotonic reasoning based on intuitionistic logic. Our main idea is a generalization of the notion of answer sets for arbitrary propositional theories. We call this extended framework safe beliefs. We present an algorithm, based on the Davis-Putnam (DP) method, to compute safe beliefs for arbitrary propositional theories. We briefly discuss...
متن کاملPossibilistic Safe Beliefs
In the paper by Oscar Estrada et al. it is introduced the concept of “Possibilistic Intuitionistic Logic (PIL)”; In that paper, the authors present results analogous to those of the well-known intuitionistic logic, such as a Deduction Theorem, a Generalized version of the Deduction Theorem, a Cut Rule, a weak version of a Refutation Theorem, a Substitution Theorem and Glivenko’s Theorem. The co...
متن کاملBelief Revision in Non-Monotonic Reasoning and Logic Programming
In order to be able to explicitly reason about beliefs, we've introduced a non-monotonic formalism, called the Autoepistemic Logic of Beliefs, AEB, obtained by augmenting classical propositional logic with a belief operator, B. For this language we've deened the static autoepistemic expansions semantics. The resulting non-monotonic knowledge representation framework turned out to be rather simp...
متن کاملElement of justification in contemporary epistemology
The definition of propositional knowledge has been said to be: "knowledge is belief in justified truth" and belief, truth, and justified are necessary and adequate conditions in the actualization of knowledge. Many faults have been directed towards this three elemental definition, which some of them have been derived from the element of justification. This article reviews some of the most im...
متن کاملEfficient decision procedures for the integration of planning and formal verification in advanced systems
The autonomy and safety of critical systems is a crucial task that can be addressed via “Safe Planning”. Safe Planning is the task of generating/validating plans that not only achieve the goal, but verify also a set of user-defined properties. A promising approach for Safe Planning is the result of the integration between planning and formal verification techniques and relies on a compilation i...
